What: Based on research conducted within juvenile detention, the session will explore the nature and extent of trauma exposure and resultant symptomology experienced by incarcerated youth and adults. A brief explanation of the neurobiology of traumatic memory will be used to guide an understanding of the challenges of their learning. Empirically based trauma-sensitive approaches to pedagogy will be provided for those who teach this at-risk prison population.
Who: Dr. Ian Barron, Co-Director of the Center of Youth Engagement and Professor in Student Development, College of Education has over 20 years’ experience of working and researching with traumatized populations internationally. His research, captured in a Research Excellence Framework impact case study was rated as world leading.
